BTS Shares The Story Behind Their No Hong Chul Dances In “Dynamite”

If you’re wondering how viral dance moves from 2013 made it into BTS‘s “Dynamite” MV, you’re not alone.

On September 2, BTS held a press conference called “ONLINE GLOBAL MEDIA DAY” to discuss “Dynamite”, the Billboard “Hot 100” chart, future plans, and more. The members fielded questions from reporters, including one from My Daily‘s Park Yoonji.

She asked about the “No Hong Chul Parody Theory” that began circulating online after the release of “Dynamite’s” b-side music video. People have been wondering if BTS purposely referenced comedian No Hong Chul.

According to Jungkook, BTS were surprised to see the No Hong Chul move in their b-side MV. While filming, they tried different cues and gestures suggested by the director.

Then we were doing this and we were looking at some videos online, and we saw this particular video that everyone’s talking about and sharing.

— Jungkook

In the b-side MV, Jungkook, Jimin, and all did gestures that No Hong Chul is known for.

“I did it lightly as part of the many gestures we did,” Jungkook explained. “This was for the rehearsal. It wasn’t when the cameras were rolling for the main shot. It was more of a joke, but it really made it into the B-Side MV.”

Seeing the moves in their MV was a funny surprise for BTS, who didn’t realize it would make such an impact.

In 2013, MBC’s Infinite Challenge broadcast No Hong Chul on a Real Man special episode. Jimin explained that BTS are fans of Infinite Challenge and that the No Hong Chul was popular with the members even before “Dynamite”.

“As Jungkook said, this was for the rehearsal,” Jimin went on. “We watch our rehearsal footage so we did it so we can laugh, but it was in the MV so we were really shocked. We thought it was really funny.”
