As an American, Tiffany Young has spoken previously on the struggles of Asian-American entertainers in the United States who have historically been marginalized or restricted to stereotypical roles.

I was recently looking up how many Asian entertainers and artists are on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and there aren’t even a handful, and I find that ridiculous

Tiffany has been optimistic about the potential for this to change. She has been hopeful that by increasing Asian representation in the media, young Asian-Americans can be surrounded by more role models and be inspired to pursue their own paths.

I want to send all my support and love for all the Asian-American artists and entertainers and writers and directors, because there are so many amazing ones out there right now and I think they should all be recognised.

True to her word, Tiffany has recently announced on Twitter that she bought out an entire theatre for the screening of “The Farewell”, a film about a Chinese-American woman who returns to China after she learns her grandma has been given weeks to live.

Tiffany highlighted that this was intended to support the Asian American actresses and directors who wanted their story to be told.

Tiffany joins the #GoldOpen Movement which is an Asian community movement that seeks to support Asian American storytelling and to forge a greater path for future generations of Asian filmmakers and actors.

The movement started when numerous Asian-American celebrities and groups bought out theatres in support of “Crazy Rich Asians”, which was the first major studio film with a majority Asian cast.

In the past year, there have been numerous films with Asian-Americans in leading roles, including “The Farewell” which is based on a real-life story shared by director Lulu Wang on The American Life.

The film focuses on Billi, whose traditional Chinese family decides not to inform Billi’s grandma of her terminal lung cancer.

Meanwhile, the more Americanized Billi struggles to understand the reasoning behind this. Against her parents’ wishes, she travels to China, intending to spend her grandma’s last few weeks with her.

The film has been critically acclaimed, with a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics have praised the film for its emotional storytelling of the immigrant experience and of the Asian-American struggle between their Asian roots and American upbringing.

"The Farewell" Awkwafina

Tiffany Young has drawn praise for her support for this exceptional film, including from actress Awkwafina who plays the main role Billi in “The Farewell”.

Fans will be able to see this film for free at The Landmark movie theater in Los Angeles, courtesy of Tiffany.

“The Farewell” will be released in the United States on July 12, 2019.
